Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Now Online

The Interpersonal Effectiveness Module begins TUESDAY, September 10, 2024 at an EVENING Time 7:00pm – 8:30pm.

Now that you, family, and/or friends may be returning to school, it’s a great opportunity to brush up on Interpersonal Effectiveness skills. A convenient way to learn skills is at home through a secure audio/video telehealth platform online, so no need to drive anywhere, you can learn in comfort.

As you may already know, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) represents some of the world’s best coping skills all in one place. A wealth of evidence demonstrates DBT’s effectiveness in reducing anxiety, depression, and even the symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder for which it was developed. Divided into modules for Emotion Regulation, Distress Tolerance, and Interpersonal Effectiveness – with Mindfulness integrated throughout – the Interpersonal Effectiveness module will be facilitated for 8 weeks, starting September 10, 2024 and ending October 29, 2024.

Facilitator Eric J. Blommel, MA, LPC uses apps for diary cards, distributes worksheets as PDF files, shares his screen with video clips and other materials for the group, and encourages the use of phones, tablets, and laptops. Feedback from veterans of other DBT groups indicates that integrating DBT reminders and tracking into existing daily technology use is helpful and convenient.

Note that the group is open to Colorado residents only since that is where Eric is licensed.

What is DBT Group Therapy?

The term “Group Therapy” may bring up images of process groups, which are the kind where people spend the whole time talking about their feelings. This group is a psychoeducational group, which means it is structured more like a class. Skills are imparted via text, video, and discussion. There is a little bit of processing at the start of each session, when we talk about how our week went using the skills, so we can share our triumphs and challenges as part of the learning process. Sometimes people relate their life experiences to the experiences discussed when we are learning new skills. Overall, DBT group therapy arms you with an arsenal of tools to improve emotional intelligence and assists you in dealing effectively with previously challenging situations. DBT skills improve emotional resiliency and help to eliminate self-defeating behaviors.

More about DBT

Dialectical-Behavior Therapy is one of the most empirically researched therapy modalities for treating people who suffer from significant emotional dysregulation and prolonged relationship difficulties. First conceived in the 1980s by Marsha Linehan, DBT was systematically designed to help people build concrete, practical skills for mindful self-awareness, emotional development, stress management, and the cultivation of a baseline of well-being.
